Female Kickboxer Puts Her Attacker in Choke Hold.
Learn the Techniques to Defend Yourself.
We read a new story that spoke to the valuable nature of martial-arts and the need for self-defence:
A man with a history of violence, including a 2011 attack on a young couple, has now been convicted of sexual assault. Mark Willis, 39, targeted a woman as she walked home in Cheltenham, England.
He initially punched her, pushing her over a wall in front garden, before jumping on top of her
The woman, a kickboxer for two-years, who had also taken a self-defence course, was able to disable her attacker on August 31, 2014.
In court, the woman who is not named, described how she first tried to break his arm with a hold, which was unsuccessful.
“I think he figured out what I was trying to do because he managed to wriggle free and he hit me again repeatedly in the face.” she said.
“My legs were still free so I lifted my left leg up onto his shoulder and around the back of his neck. I crossed my right leg over and squeezed together as hard as I could.”
Willis struggled for air, and despite one last desperate punch on the side of her face, she was able to make him pass out. His body limp, she flipped him off and crawled to the door of a nearby house.
It was not luck that allowed this woman to escape, it was her determined nature backed by successful techniques that she trained in. Many people, women and men, would be surprised at the effectiveness of martial arts in certain situations.
Certain self-defence techniques, such as those learned Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), are completely designed around the situation that this woman experienced. These martial arts techniques have been refined for this exact scenario, focusing on grappling and ground-fighting in close quarters. For an untrained opponent, they are actually at a severe disadvantage against a martial artist who can take advantage of the situation.
Cases like the one mentioned above, point out that aside from the benefits of physical fitness, character building, and mental focus - martial arts is important means of self-defence that can’t be taken for granted.
